Surfing in Shorts

Gray Camo Top: Billabong Rashguard
Black Swimming Shorts: Express
Sunglasses: Fendi

It's the first time in a long, long, long time (and when I say a long time, I mean more than a decade) that I've worn shorts to an outing with friends. I've always been conscious about my muscled calves, the cellulite on my thighs, and my not-so-demure ankles that I've escaped every opportunity to show them off. See how much negativity there is in that sentence? I've decided to stop that.

I've been trying to fight off all those derogatory adjectives and turn my focus on the parts that I love about them. For example, I like my toes. They're all nice, smooth, round and cute. I like how my feet are proportioned, even though they are wide and hard to fit into some shoes. I like my thighs as they are firm and strong. I like the smooth skin on my legs. They are God's gift through genetics.

When I began consciously "admiring" myself during the trip, I had the best time! I went surfing for the first time, and thought about what to do on top of the board rather than how I look while doing it. I didn't concern myself with how my stomach bulged nor how my cellulite showed. I wore what pleased me and didn't bother to care about what people might say about me. At the end of the day, all I received was compliment after compliment. That shut the mean voice in my head up!

I've been teaching myself to shun away from society's boxed up standards on beauty and learning to love every bit of my body. Yes, even the floppy bits and odd curves that I was ashamed of and kept under wraps for so long. After all, they are every bit a part of my body and this is the only one I have. I have to stop taking those things for granted and start appreciating what I have been blessed with.

My body may not be perfect, but it is complete and healthy. And I love it. :)

  1. Hi ! thanks for dropping by to my site. Anyway, I can sooo relate to this post. My negativity was big thighs, show off cellulite and hello... varicose veins because I love to hear heels since Highschool. I was also in days that I feel ugly with them considering I am short too! But I don't know one day, I just fell in love with my legs! I mean.. I only wear jeans 5x max in a year! I love skirt and shorts that compliments me. You have been blessed with flawless legs girl! If I have those, I'll go shorter with shorts haha! no kidding! I love your blog!

  2. Thanks for the compliment, Sofie!

Recently, I've been wearing skirts and shorts for 4 out of the 7 days in a week. Aside from the excuse of the hot summer weather, I think I also just got over the insecurity hurdle and stopped thinking about what other people might be thinking. It's liberating!

  3. Wow! So I'm not the only one who don't keep many jeans in my closet! I must be in good company! Yay!

I laud you for such empowering realizations and I envy you for being able to try surfing. I'm all talk, no action. Hahay.

Hey, where's your photo/s facing us with your lovely smile? ;)

    Nice beach bag, too!
